Robert Hughes is the founder of Bourbontologist. He is an Executive Bourbon Steward and lifetime member of the Stave & Thief Society.
Robert is not a whiskey snob and believes that when it comes to enjoying whiskey there is no right or wrong. Even the legendary Pappy Van Winkle enjoyed his with a splash of water and a twist of lemon!
He has an engaging and educational approach that suits the novice to the afficianado. Robert’s passion for whiskey and bourbon has made him a sought after expert for corporate and private tastings.

At Bourbontologist, our mission is to spread the love for bourbon by helping people discover what they enjoy and why they enjoy it. Through expert-led tastings, engaging storytelling, and a deep appreciation for bourbon’s rich history, we create unforgettable experiences that educate, inspire, and connect. We believe bourbon is more than just a drink—it’s a journey of flavors, traditions, and craftsmanship, and we’re passionate about sharing that journey with every guest we serve.
The Love Of Bourbon
For those who love whiskey or bourbon you can probably recall certain moments in time that sparked that love. For me that spark was goes back 10 years preparing for an annual winter camping trip with a group of friends in the North Georgia mountains. Each year we would take turns bringing a gift for the group. Campfires and Bourbon are such a natural fit that I decided my gift would be a custom blended bourbon created just for Winter Camping.
I believe in the saying if you’re going to do something, do it right! For me that meant a lot of research of how bourbon blending works and more importantly how to end up with a blend that was worthy of my fellow Winter campers. And that was the spark!
The more I researched the more I appreciated not only the nuances of bourbon, the history of bourbon but also the things that bourbon can represent: celebrations, honoring friendships, fellowship, rewarding yourself for an achievement, sitting on the porch and contemplating.
